Due to the Mid North Coast Correctional Facility being identified as high risk work site, innovative and long lasting construction methods were implemented to ensure security and safety challenges were met in the live environment.
True ingenuity was clear in the use of light TRUECORE® Steel Trusses for the custom roof structure of the new accommodation blocks. The 9,700m2 of custom TRUECORE® Steel Trusses were prefabricated by welding high quality lightweight steel and assembled at ground level, before being craned into position. This resulted with accelerated build times and a strong, straight and precise roof.
The resulting health and safety benefits of reducing worker’s exposure to falling from height won Watpac a Safe Work NSW award.

TRUECORE® steel with Activate® technology is an aluminium/zinc/magnesium alloy coated structural steel with a distinctive blue resin surface finish. It’s used in residential house framing and building frames for mid-rise buildings including multi-unit dwellings, and large facilities.
Frames made from BlueScope’s TRUECORE® steel are strong, straight and they won’t warp over time.
